Traveller dressed in loose linen clothes, scarf, sunglasses and sneakers on Dubai sand dunes

Dressing right makes the difference between a fun day and a gritty, sunburned one. Here is what actually works in the dunes.

Clothing basics

  • Loose, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen.
  • Long, light trousers or a maxi skirt โ€” they protect from sun and flying sand.
  • Modest tops that cover the shoulders, respectful at camp and practical in the sun.
  • A light jacket or hoodie from November to March for the evening.

Footwear

Sneakers or closed shoes are ideal for quad biking and sandboarding. Sand gets everywhere, so skip your best pair. At camp, flip-flops are handy.

Sun and sand protection

Sunglasses and a scarf

A scarf (or the traditional shemagh you can try at camp) shields your face during dune bashing and quad rides.

Sunscreen and lip balm

Even on an evening safari, the late-afternoon sun is strong.

Packing checklist

  1. Water bottle (water is usually provided too โ€” confirm when booking)
  2. Phone or camera with a zip bag against sand
  3. Sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
  4. Light jacket in winter
  5. Small amount of cash for extras (placeholder: ask us what is included)
  6. Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to car sickness

What to leave behind

Heavy jewellery, expensive shoes, drones (rules apply) and anything you would hate to fill with sand.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dress code for a desert safari?

There is no strict dress code, but light, comfortable, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful and practical against sun and sand.

Can I wear sandals?

Closed shoes or sneakers are best for quad bikes and sandboarding. Many guests carry sandals or go barefoot on soft sand at camp.

Do I need a jacket?

In winter, yes โ€” desert evenings can feel surprisingly cold after sunset. A light jacket or hoodie is enough for most people.
